AUSTIN WIGGINS
"I realized that I wanted to work in a
field where I could bring forward-
thinking ideas and inclusivity to the
forefront. I want to use architecture to
not only create beautiful and functional
spaces but also to be a force for social
good."
AIA San Diego is delighted to announce this year’s co-scholarship winner - Austin Wiggins. The scholarship committee, in partnership with the generous support of DPR Construction, was proud to announce Austin Wiggins as the well-deserved recipient during the annual AIA San Diego Design Awards ceremony on Friday, May 30, 2025. This award celebrates Austin’s exceptional work, his incredible passion for architecture, and his commitment to bringing inclusivity to the forefront of the field.
A native San Diegan, Austin previously worked in construction before enrolling in the architecture program at Mesa College. This fall, he will transfer to Cal Poly Pomona to finish his degree.
As part of his scholarship, Austin is required to present to a K-5 school in San Diego County to share his journey and passion for architecture. This year, he presented to group of 3rd graders, showing them that architecture is about more than just buildings—it's about people. He encouraged the children to consider who would use a space and how it could foster connection. In his words, "architecture is a collaboration—many people working together, looking to the past, present, and future to create spaces that connect us with nature and with each other."
He shared that a career in architecture doesn't require "natural gifts" but rather a willingness to learn and a sense of discovery. He used visionary architects like Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid to illustrate how every designer brings their unique perspective to a project.
A highlight of the event was the House of Cards Challenge, where students built their own structures. This playful activity quickly became a lesson in balance, creativity, and collaboration—the core principles of architecture.
Austin's humility, curiosity, and ability to connect with his audience are truly inspiring. His message that design is for everyone and that the spaces we create shape our lives resonates deeply.
The AIA San Diego Laura Shinn Diversity Scholarship honors Laura's legacy by supporting students like Austin in their pursuit of architecture as a path to leadership and community impact. Congratulations again to Austin, our Co- 2025 scholarship recipient, and a promising voice shaping the future of our built environment.
