Sustainability & COTE
San Diego’s Committee on the Environment has been reactivated!
AIA San Diego COTE’s focus will be to develop a local workplan for the coming years, tapping into the immense knowledge and focus of AIA California and its Climate Action programs, as well as AIA National’s commitment to sustainability, which include the following—
key principles
Principle 1 | Take action to support rapid de-carbonization of the built environment
Principle 2 | Reduce embodied carbon
Principle 3 | Reduce potable water waste
Principle 4 | Educate clients, policymakers and communities
Principle 5 | Support innovative practice, policymaking, and implementation strategies.
Advocacy vs Education
While we view advocacy and policy as critical pieces in the fight against climate change, the San Diego COTE will be more tailored toward education (practitioners, consultants, end users, general public). The emphasis includes, but not limited to:
a. Obligations – i.e. what is required of licensed architects (Learning Units), Business Case for Climate Action, 2030 Commitment
b. Resources – Partnering with CA Cote to leverage resources, provide easy access to tools, and road map for the range of firms (large/medium/small/sole prop)
c. Uniqueness – How San Diego COTE is uniquely positioned to connect, inspire, and transform culture within the architecture/design community to create real measurable impact.

AIA 2030 Commitment
The AIA 2030 Commitment is an actionable climate strategy that gives us a set of standards and goals for reaching net zero emissions in the built environment.
The latest climate data tells us that reducing carbon emissions is not enough. To make the biggest impact, we must all commit to net zero emissions by 2030—a path that requires strong, immediate action. Since the built environment creates a staggering 40% of the world’s emissions, architects, engineers, and owners play a key role.
More than 1,000 firms have already committed to reaching carbon neutrality by 2030. Are you ready to join them?
