At 850 West Cedar Street, the Vulcan steam room and bathhouse originally “provided a private and safe space for gay men to meet, socialize and engage…in a time when homosexuality was not only condemned but also prior to 1975, illegal.”[5] The steam room community not only provided a socialization safe zone, but also emotional support and information to it’s members regarding sexually transmitted diseases and how best to protect themselves”[5]
