On Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Justice
The American Institute of Architects, as part of the global community, champions a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion within the profession of architecture to create a better environment for all. Achieving this vision has a direct impact on the relevance of our profession and the world's prosperity, health, and future.
Future Forward. That was the theme of our Career Fair this year and also of AIA National with regards to social justice issues ricocheting across the nation. 2020 was a tough year to say the least-- global pandemic, economic hardships for families and businesses, as well as exposed social justice issues long kept below the surface. As Architects, we have long looked at good design as creating neighborhoods and communities, beautiful homes that house families and workplaces that foster relationships. We’ve looked at dismantling barriers for our disabled neighbors - but what about the other barriers within our communities? Communities of other ethnicities, color, and gender/identity?
If we’ve learned anything from this past year, it’s that we can no longer stay silent on the other issues that affect our communities as well. AIA San Diego is committed to broadening equity, diversity, and inclusion to create a stronger profession. As a member-based organization, we believe that we are stronger together – a collaborative network of designers and architects representing different races, ethnicities, and backgrounds. We believe our work can and should help foster a more equitable, fair, objective, just and sustainable environment for all.
Our chapter is committed to continue facilitating conversations around these issues. Want to participate? Join in on the conversation at any of our existing committees (see our calendar of events to register). Join us this year in looking at our future forward - a brighter, stronger tomorrow together.
