AIA College of Fellows Elevates Michael T. Roush, FAIA
AIA San Diego is proud to announce that Michael T. Roush, FAIA, of AIA San Diego and UCSD has been elevated to the College of Fellows, AIA’s highest membership honor. AIA Fellows are honored in three individual categories for their exceptional work and contributions to architecture and society on a national level. Less than three percent of the architecture profession achieves the level of Fellowship.
Object Two: Practice Management or Practice Technical Advancement
"To advance the science and art of planning and building by advancing the standards of practice."
Fellowship in this object is granted to architects who have made notable contributions through their work in the practice of architecture. Practice includes firm management, administration, and project management or specialty areas (specific building types, technical expertise).
As Program Manager at UC San Diego, Michael has dedicated his practice to the elevation of project and practice management with an emphasis on the process of design. Michael Roush creates analytical models and organizational frameworks for higher education capital programs that elevate the delivery of public institution projects through transformative project management, operationalized processes, and predicted outcomes. Michael has had a vital role in developing management standards based in standardization, collaboration, transparency and mentorship. In his own words, Michael believes that
“A strong Project Manager leads the project by designing a journey for the entire project team that is both inclusive and transformational.”
This sentiment has acted as a “true north” throughout every project journey over a successful and dynamic career. Over the course of his career Michael has worked on multiple high profile projects at many firms including HMC Architects and NTD Architecture. He now acts as a representative of UC San Diego, where he is the Program Manager of Business Enterprise at Capital Program Management, focusing on improvements to the project delivery process. Michael is a trailblazer in the adopton of project data to drive excellence and enhance transparency on large-scale capital building programs. Through his work with the UC San Diego capital program, valued at $1B design and construction annually, Michael has maximized limited resources and precious capital dollars through process improvements resulting in the delivery of award-winning public projects. His leadership in project management has transformed UC San Diego Capital Program Management into an exemplary data-centric organization. He has leveraged his extensive experience in private practice to reshape internal processes and actively trains and mentors project management staff, and actively shares his work with his counterparts in the Construction Owners Association of America (COAA). Michael believes that Practice Management is a “full-contact sport” and his dedication and attention is obvious throughout a portfolio of successful projects, including Jacobs Medical Center and Loma Linda University Medical Center Healing Garden. In addition to his practice, Michael has served as a dedicated volunteer leader, mentor, and advocate where he has served a variety of roles at AIA Columbus and AIA San Diego including serving as our 2015 Chapter President. In addition to his time at AIA, he now has been working closely with the Construction Owners Association of America to bring his tools and methods to a broader reach of practice.
Please join us in congratulating Michael for many significant achievements during his notable career. We look forward to the next chapter of advocacy, mentorship and leadership.
