LOCAL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: Hillcrest Hotel To Be Converted Into Luxury Apartments
San Diego-based company, SENTRE, dba Whitson Hillcrest, LLC, recently acquired an 80-room hotel in Hillcrest. The company plans to convert the property, located at 606 Washington Street near State Route 163, into luxury apartments “with a vintage flair.” For the past 20 years, the property has been operating as the Sommerset Suites Hotel. After the conversion, the building will be rebranded as The Whitson, named after William Wesley Whitson, a well-known developer of the Hillcrest community. The property in Hillcrest was originally built in 1986 as an 81-unit apartment community before it turned into the Sommerset Suites Hotel in the mid-1990s.

The property is located at one of Hillcrest’s major axes – Washington Street, near Fifth Avenue and State Route 163.

“With San Diegans increasingly searching for high quality, amenity-rich, and centrally located places to live, we saw an opportunity to return the property to its original apartment use, creating a perfect addition to our growing ‘SENTRE Living’ portfolio,” said SENTRE President and CEO Doug Arthur.

SENTRE said the renovation efforts will cost more than $3 million and will include a new indoor-outdoor lounge and hotel-style pool and sun deck.

The Whitson will also feature a new top-notch fitness center, plus upscale apartment interiors with a boutique, vintage feel.

HFF represented both the buyer and seller in the transaction. SENTRE purchased the Sommerset Suites Hotel for $19.5 million, or $245,000 per unit.
