Drawing the future: Collaborative visions in Architecture

+1 CEU

The talk will explore how graphic representation in architecture has the potential to foster community engagement and promote inclusive practices. By moving seamlessly between hand-drawn sketches, digital renderings, diagrams, and construction drawings, architects can create more accessible and comprehensible designs for diverse audiences, including the architectural community, those who build and permit the projects, those who pay for the project, and the future resident and neighbor. Through case studies, we will demonstrate how clear and inclusive visual communication can enhance public participation, influence policy decisions, and create spaces that reflect the needs and aspirations of the many stakeholders.

Presented by: Marcela Gracia, AIA | Studio E Architects

Marcela is a licensed Architect and Associate at Studio E Architects in San Diego. Marcela has more than 10 years of experience in multifamily housing design. Energy Decarbonization Blueprint

+1 HSW|CEU

Utilizing four case studies, this course explores how to create a new blueprint for energy decarbonization that aligns with the changing electric grid. An overview of energy infrastructure changes that are taking place in the state of California will be provided alongside how these changes impact the types of building systems being considered for a multi-family building, a school, a healthcare project, and an office building. The course will explore the carbon impacts of each case study, both today and in the future as the electric grid continues to decarbonize utilizing expected average carbon emissions for 2030 and 2050.

Is San Diego a World Design Capital? A Turncoats-Style Debate

+1 CEU

The World Design Organization, a Montreal-based industrial design NGO, named San Diego Tijuana as the 2024 World Design Capital - but is San Diego, itself a World Design Capital? We have all attended events, spent hours creating programming, asked our city council members to give it money and received the free tote bag. Now is the time to question what this whole year is really about! Using the Turncoats debate format developed by Phineas Harper & Smith Mordak with Robert Mull, we will interrogate the complex factors of architecture culture, context, development and design to determine whether or not San Diego, on its own, is a model city for architecture and if not, where can we as architects go from here?

In the spirit of open discussion & per the rules of a Turncoats Debate, phones & recording devises are not allowed at this session & all attendees will be asked to seal their phones into envelopes before the program begins. People may exit the session at any time, of course, but no late attendees will be allowed in. Thank you for your understanding!

Industry Pain Points in Emerging Building Technologies (USGBC-CA)

+1 CEU

In the dynamic 2024 landscape of the architectural sector, new technologies are surfacing, yet their integration into practice lags. Architectural firms must embrace innovation to transcend conventional constructions. Unfortunately, these groundbreaking technologies lack adequate policy support, and codes evolve sluggishly compared to the urgency for project implementation.

To effectively combat climate change, every sector demands innovations curbing environmental impact. Most products, however, stem from established corporations driven by market demand and policy, neglecting environmental considerations. We urgently need climate-focused enterprises at the forefront, surging beyond policy constraints to make a swift and substantial impact. Join us in this session to hear from visionary founders steering innovation in their product sectors and delve into their journeys navigating the market.

Presented By Casey Castor, Assoc. AIA | Practice/Mack Research. Emily Dinino | Thermoshade. Jose Urizar | DTE Materials. Jordan Sotudeh | Vanaera.

Casey Castor, Assoc. AIA | Practice/Mack Research: Casey grew up in the Midwest with most of his young life being in rural Wisconsin. Spending much of his time outdoors camping, hiking, and fishing he then moved to urban Milwaukee to pursue an undergraduate in Architecture + Design. Through many comprehensive design studios, he found his passion for design and retained his love for the environment through sustainability in architecture. This led to the early development of urban wind module through a kinetic facadeʼs studio where he developed the first mock-up iteration of a wall assembly that could produce energy through wind and rain. Then moving to southern California in 2016 to join GGA Architects, he spent multiple years learning the architectural profession while working on affordable housing projects. After 1-year away from academia he decided to attend USC to pursue a Masters in Building Science + Sustainable design while continuing his architectural work full-time. During his thesis he learned refined practices for building design, construction and sustainability. Focusing much of his time understanding energy modeling, building analyses such as daylighting and solar analysis, it allowed him to come back to GGA and take over as their resident Building Science Analyst/ Environmental Designer. While working at GGA, Casey has continued the development of the technology with the Mack Research team. Spending nights sketching ideas and workshopping the components with 3D modeling and 3d printing, the early-stage prototype is gaining further traction with a DOE grant. Casey is well nestled into the world of sustainability and looking to steer his career further into the cleantech community.

The Rise of the City Architect

+1 CEU

21st-century cities face unprecedented challenges related to the built environment. From land use policies to energy efficiency and resilience, these challenges require the expertise of licensed design professionals. Very few cities have on their staff architects trained to address these issues in critical local government leadership positions. A Chief City Architect would allow local governments to have someone on staff who understands the community’s unique built environment needs based on its size, values, and existing governing structures. In this session, you will learn about the importance of a Chief City Architect program that AIA National is promoting and how you can work closely with your local government to advocate for the position.

Panelists Include Michael Winn, AIA | AIA National; Ric Abramson | City Architect - West Hollywood, CA; Jonathon Glus | Executive Director for the Arts and Culture, San Diego; Moderated by Megan Groth | USD; Heather Ruszczyk | the Miller Hull Partnership
