2024 AIA San Diego President, Jamie Intervalo, AIA
Colleagues,
Welcome to 2024! Last year marked our AIA San Diego’s 95th anniversary, reflecting almost a century of impactful work in building communities and iconic structures that define our built environment. Looking ahead, what challenges will shape the next century, and how can our design community positively influence and transform San Diego's development? Amidst challenges from a multi-year pandemic and societal shifts, including social and climate justice issues, our role as citizen architects is critical now more than ever.
Our past leaders tackled issues related to downtown and military development, the post-war residential housing boom, and civic identity. In 2024 and beyond, we must not only address these ongoing issues but also focus on sustainability, equity, and prosperity in the next century of development. How will we stay relevant as civic advocates, respond to social and climate justice, and prepare the next generation of leaders?
As part of our strategic plan, empowering the next generation remains a priority. Despite the national exam pass rate of 9%, our chapter is dedicated to reducing barriers for aspiring architects (1). The chapter will continue to offer study groups, lectures, and workshops to students including those in auxiliary programs to architecture and in Baja California. We will also continue to offer our annual Laura Shinn Diversity in Architecture Scholarship program.
Our current designation as World Design Capital is a testament to the impact of design in our region (2). This award is given every two years and recognizes international cities for their effective use of design to enhance economic, social, cultural, and environmental quality of life. The rich, diverse talent pool distributed across our international region celebrates the power of design across disciplines, including architecture. I encourage ALL to lean into this year's events and celebrate this incredible distinction.
Reflecting on the last century of development, it’s inspiring to see how our architectural community's commitment has shaped San Diego’s built environment. As your President in this, the Chapter’s 96th year, I am honored to carry forward our tradition of design excellence. Join me in leaning in, shaping the challenges of our generation, supporting future leaders, and celebrating the profound impact of design in our lives.
Sincerely,
Jamie Intervalo, AIA
