Laura DuCharme Conboy, FAIA
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NEWEST FELLOW!
Inspiring the Next Generation
Laura DuCharme Conboy, FAIA, is dedicated to shaping the future of architecture through education and mentorship. Her 15-year commitment to AIA’s K-12 Built Environment Education Program (BEEP) and leadership in the San Diego Architectural Foundation’s (SDAF) BEEP initiative have introduced countless young minds to the impact of design. Through hands-on workshops, engaging design challenges, and meaningful connections with architects, Laura fosters curiosity and critical thinking in students across the region.
Laura’s work extends beyond traditional classrooms. She developed a week-long summer program with the La Jolla Historical Society, immersing teens in design principles, sketching, CAD, and site tours. Students from across the U.S. participate, with many returning as interns and future architecture students. She also spearheaded San Diego’s participation in AIA California’s “Kids Draw Architecture” and launched KidSketch, a virtual sketching program that evolved into Crossing the Line, a 2024 World Design Capital initiative uniting young artists across the San Diego-Tijuana region.
Building Lasting Connections
Laura’s passion for connecting architects with the next generation is evident in her DomeSweetDome program, which began as a small classroom activity and expanded into a large-scale Earth Day event, bringing together architects, students, and families to build 7-foot geodesic domes. Recognized by San Diego Design Week and AIA’s Architecture Week, this initiative exemplifies her ability to engage both volunteers and participants in the joy of design.
Through leadership roles on non-profit boards, Laura bridges organizations like AIA San Diego, SDAF, and the La Jolla Historical Society to strengthen youth programming and volunteer networks. Understanding that not all architects are natural educators, she has developed tutorials and presentations to help volunteers confidently engage with students.
Honoring Architectural Legacies
Laura also champions recognition across generations, chairing AIA San Diego’s Lifetime Achievement Award committee, which celebrates both seasoned architects and emerging professionals through the Young Architect of the Year Awards (YAYA). By curating the annual presentation, she ensures that architects at all career stages see the profound and lasting impact of their work.
Through her tireless advocacy for education, mentorship, and community engagement, Laura DuCharme Conboy, FAIA, has left an indelible mark on the profession—an impact that will continue to inspire future generations.
Laura will be honored at the Investiture and AIA Awards Gala, June 5, 2025. Learn more about fellowship on AIA’s website.
