In Memoriam... Lawrence “Larry” Ronald Sillman, AIA

Influential and Beloved San Diego Architect, Leader, and Friend, Larry Sillman, AIA, of SILLMAN has passed away. He was 77 years old.

Following a career spanning a half-century and hundreds of major commercial and residential projects designed and developed, architect Lawrence “Larry” Ronald Sillman has died at the age of 77.

Born in San Diego, Sillman moved to Modesto until completing his college and military duty. Sillman received his BA in architecture and structural engineering from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and after graduation, entered the military as a Corps of Engineer officer. He was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division as a platoon leader with the 65th Combat Engineer.

Sillman was awarded the Bronze Star and Army Commendation with “V” device for his tour of duty in Vietnam.

Sillman found he had a passion for designing veterans’ housing. Some of his most gratifying work included building veterans' homes in Barstow and Chula Vista. Using his achievements with the design-build process, Sillman convinced the State of California Department of Veterans Affairs to build their Fresno and Redding veterans homes. These innovative projects soon became some of the most successful the VA ever built.

Larry was the founding principal of his practice, SILLMAN, established in 1976. Though he retired recently in 2020, he continued to have an active role at the firm, and remained involved in local community organizations.

Larry has been active as a board member of the La Jolla YMCA and the La Jolla High School Foundation. He is also a member of the La Jolla Country Club.

Larry was an active and beloved member of AIA San Diego and affiliated with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Coalition for Adequate School Housing (CASH) Lean Construction Institute (LCI) San Diego Regional Sustainability Partnership.

Larry’s tragic passing is felt deeply throughout our community, and he will no doubt be remembered through his leadership, kindness, mentorship, and impact on our local landscape .

Our deepest sympathies go out his family and loved ones, to the SILLMAN family, and to our wider San Diego architectural community affected by this loss.
