Dr. Mitra Kanaani, FAIA, D.ARCH, MCP of AIA San Diego, has been appointed to the California Architects Board by Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Kanaani has been a Professor at NewSchool of Architecture and Design since 1992, where she has held several roles, including as Chair of the Architecture Department and the Undergraduate Program, Acting Dean and Director of Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure, IPAL Program. She has been Principal at Universal Design since 1997. Kanaani earned a Master of Science degree in urban planning from the University of Tehran, a Master of Science degree in architecture from the University of New Mexico and a Doctor of Architecture degree from the University of Hawaii.
Mitra has also been the recipient of multiple local, state, and national awards for her contributions to the education of the future architects. She is a registered architect and a Fellow of American Institute of Architects, FAIA, recognized for her contributions in the advancement of the standards of practice in the science and art of planning.
She served as secretary for the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture an international evaluator at the National Architectural Accrediting Board. Kanaani is a member of the Building Technology Educators Society, International Code Council and board member at the American Institute of Architects, San Diego Chapter.
The California Architects Board was created in 1901 by the California Legislature to fulfill the mission of protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the public through the regulation of the practice of architecture in California. It is one of numerous entities within the Department of Consumer Affairs responsible for consumer protection and the regulation of licensed professionals. The board establishes regulations for examination and licensing of the profession of architecture in California, which today numbers over 21,000 licensed architects and approximately 10,000 candidates who are in the process of meeting examination and licensure requirements.
