2025 Young Architect of the Year Award
Matthew Segal, AIA, is a family man and Architect dedicated to advancing design and the community in San Diego and beyond. 100% vertically integrated; he personally oversees every aspect of his projects—including design, development, construction management, interior and landscape design, permitting, and MEP plans. His award-winning personal work—including The Post Office Lofts, Villa Cubo, the Goldfinch Residence, the historic preservation of the Arista Residence, and Remedy Holistic Pharmacy in San Diego, prioritizes affordability, sustainability, and net-zero energy performance without compromising design quality. He always strives to do more with less in all aspects of his design and work.
In addition to his practice, Matthew has been pivotal in setting the foundation for statewide progressive code changes in both the elimination of residential parking requirements and implementation of micro unit housing. He mentors students, supports community initiatives, and was recently appointed to the City of San Diego Historical Resources Board by the Mayor. In his free time Matthew is internationally published architectural photographer. Matthew has been able to accomplish all of this personal work outside of his work with his father and mentor Jonathan Segal FAIA where he also acted as the lead designer, project manager and construction manager on 7 award winning projects.
