As part of AIA San Diego's year-long celebration of Design Excellence in San Diego, the AIA San Diego Preservation Committee is pleased to present this tour, the awaited restoration of the Botanical Building. This site tour will be led by member firm, Platt/Whitelaw Architects, Inc. Join us for an exclusive tour of one of Balboa Park's most cherished destinations, as we explore the rich history and architectural beauty of this iconic landmark.

History: The Botanical Building was constructed for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition in Balboa Park and has been one of San Diego’s most beloved landmarks ever since. The building has been undergoing a significant restoration to replace thousands of feet of redwood lath and repair the rusty structural frame. In addition, the project is reconstructing the original stucco arcades that were removed in the 1950s. This hard hat tour will show the progress of work and will discuss the many challenges in restoring such a unique building.

Attendees will learn the following:
• The historical standards that must be followed.
• The unique design and structure.
• Restoration techniques and challenges.
• The new rear addition and upgraded lighting.

Important Information:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): All attendees must bring their own PPE, including a safety vest, hard hat, and sturdy, closed-toed shoes. We cannot permit entry to the site without proper PPE.

  • Accessibility: Please note that construction sites may not be accessible to individuals with disabilities.

  • Site Access: Access to the site will be granted only to those who have registered in advance. We encourage all participants to bring either a printed ticket or have it accessible on their mobile devices for entry.
