About the Project:

A 10-acre interdisciplinary environment blending academic, residential, commercial, and cultural programming. At 1.6M SF, it fulfills the school’s pioneering vision for a vibrant live/learn community that anticipates and accommodates consistent annual enrollment increases and exemplifies sustainable design. Each of the six primary buildings are designed for LEED Platinum certification and the 1200 car parking structure below is designed as a net zero Parksmart Gold certified project.  We will be exploring many of the sustainable design strategies and features on the tour.  It’s a new and transformative environment in which students, staff, and visitors are provided an immersive experience through a variety of programming extending well beyond academics.

The NTPLLN provides a new home for Sixth College with over 2,048 student beds in multiple mixed-use/residential structures. New Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences Public Engagement buildings are connected via classroom-containing bridges, collectively creating the Ridge Walk Academic Center (RWAC). Now the largest lecture hall on campus, The Jeannie is a 17,323 SF, 600-seat, stand-alone auditorium. Additional features include a public Craft Center, 9000 SF of ground floor retail, a market, extensive outdoor spaces, pedestrian and bike-friendly pathways, green plazas, with several options for dining and recreation.

Dr. Tommy Zakrzewski

As Principal and Director of Building Engineering Physics at HKS, Dr. Zakrzewski leads in the integration of optimizing the physical characteristics of buildings and their systems to balance energy demands, exploit natural energy sources and minimize the reliance on carbon- based energy sources as a primary practice focus. As a subject matter expert for integrated, high-performance sustainable design, he provides technical leadership, leads sustainable design research, and informs strategic design decisions. Additionally, he helps to create, advance, and manage annual Environmental, Social & Governance objectives, key results and actions at HKS.

Walt Kanzler

As Senior Director of Project Quality Management at UC San Diego,Walt oversees several programs in support of the Capital Program and Facilities Management including Campus Design Guidelines and Specifications, Life Cycle Building Commissioning, Sustainable Building Practices, LEED, Pre-Design workflows, Seismic Safety, Campus Accessibility, and various special projects. His direct involvement in Green Building Policy in the UC System associated with the Green Building Working Group and day to day support of all capital projects continues to add quality, value and sustainability strategies transforming the campus built environment.

Samantha Rollins

is a civil engineer by trade, with a passionate interest in the interconnectedness of sustainable architectural design with psychology and wellness. Samantha aims to further the field of sustainable architecture and holistic design by combining her love of art and yoga with her understanding of building science. Samantha currently works at Stok, a sustainable building consulting firm.She is a member of the Real Estate and Workplace Strategy team, helping clients configure solutions for the health and wellness of their businesses and employees. She is also functioning as a cross-team integrated member assisting the Sustainable Consulting team with various tasks such as LEED, WELL, and Fitwel documentation and project coordination. With her experience as an engineer for Clark Construction on the UCSD NTPLLN Project, she had managed the LEED Platinum and Parksmart Gold Certification process, as well as overseeing $10.3 million of FF&E scope.
