Join AIA San Diego’s Preservation Committee, the Custom Residential Architects Network (CRAN), and the International Associates Committee for an in-person Balboa Park walking tour which will cover three recently completed park projects. Preservation architect David Marshall, AIA of Heritage Architecture & Planning, will serve as our guide on this delightful tour.
First, visit phase one of the Palisades rehabilitation project where parking has been replaced with green space, shade trees and seating areas. The restored plaza resembles how it looked for the 1935-36 California Pacific International Exposition.
Next the tour will see and hear about the recently reconstructed tile murals on the façade of the Automotive Museum. The four murals were made from 576 custom-glazed ceramic tiles and measure 8x18 feet each. They depict California’s scenic beauty, agriculture, commerce and industry. Committee of One Hundred President Roger Showley will explain how his team created these colorful 1935 murals and adjacent ornamentation from old black and white photos.
The final stop will be the International Cottages. Five new Spanish-style buildings were added for Mexico, Korea, India, Turkey, Palestine, Peru, Panama, Chamorros and the Philippines. The new cottages are architecturally compatible with the historic 1935 cottages and were carefully sited to harmonize the adjacent buildings and parkland. Architect Art Castro will represent the cottages for this part of the tour.
This Architectural tour is FREE for all!
No registration required: Join the tour 15 minutes prior in front of the Balboa Park Automotive Museum, 2080 Pan American Plaza, San Diego, CA 92101.
