Understanding Carbon Analysis for Existing Building Renovation

Join COTE for an in-person Zero Net Carbon Design CE at Smith Group! Thanks to Smith Group for hosting the session and providing light snacks and beverages.

There are several analyses on assessing embodied and operational carbon for New Construction, but very little analysis done on Existing Building Renovations. This education session will explore calculating carbon reduction when upgrading an existing building in comparison to the carbon impact of a new construction project using Athena and EC3 impact estimators--- for City of LA Ken Bernstein (OHR) and Dominique Hargreaves. The goal is to calculate the Carbon reduction when upgrading an existing building in comparison to the Carbon impact of a New Construction project in order to develop new programs and legislature to incentivize building and material reuse.

Learning Objectives

  • Learning Objective 1:
Explain use of the C40 Clean Construction Commitment targets to develop the net-zero emission buildings and infrastructure of the future by reducing embodied emissions, procuring and using only zero emission construction machinery

  • Learning Objective 2:
Briefly explain the 3R’s of Renovation: Reduce, Reuse, and Replace and how to use them effectively.

  • Learning Objective 3:
Describe Research Tools and steps for the tracking of the data to analyze the buildings efficiencies and deficiencies which will guide us on how and where to act.

  • Learning Objective 4:
Define Adaptive Reuse refers to the process of reusing an existing building for a purpose other than which it was originally built or designed for and is an effective strategy for optimizing the operational and commercial performance of built assets

  • Learning Objective 5:
Explain the use of Zero Carbon Strategies to reduce embodied and operational carbon by Adaptive Reuse rather the demolishing and building new.
