AI & the Built World: Engineering, Design, and Responsibility

  • Stone Brewery – Point Loma 2816 Historic Decatur Road San Diego, CA, 92106 United States (map)

Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping the way we design, analyze, and interact with the built environment. Join the Structural Engineers Association of San Diego (SEAOSD) and AIA San Diego for a thought-provoking evening that brings together leading voices from engineering, architecture, and academia to explore how AI is influencing the future of our professions.

This event will feature three dynamic speakers:

David Martin, SE

A practicing structural engineer and Associate Principal at Degenkolb Engineers, Dave will share how AI and automation are being integrated into structural engineering practice, including his work with the NCSEA AI Grant team.

Erik Narhi

An architect and computation expert at Buro Happold, Erik will discuss how emerging technologies—including machine learning and game engines—are transforming the architectural design process and collaboration across disciplines.

David Danks, PhD

A professor of Data Science, Philosophy, & Policy at UC San Diego, Dr. Danks will provide insight into the ethical and policy challenges of AI in the built environment, drawn from his extensive research on AI in domains like healthcare, transportation, and security.

Each speaker will present for 15–20 minutes, followed by a moderated Q&A session to dive deeper into the intersections of technology, design, and responsibility.

Whether you're a structural engineer, architect, or just AI-curious, this event will offer fresh perspectives and practical insights on what it means to build intelligently in the age of artificial intelligence.
