COTE Project Tour: Ted and Jean Scripps Marine Conservation & Technology Facility

Join AIA San Diego’s Committee on the Environment (COTE) for an exclusive project tour and networking happy hour at the Ted and Jean Scripps Marine Conservation & Technology Facility, designed by Safdie Rabines Architects for the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego.

Perched on a high bluff 200 feet above the Pacific Ocean, this LEED Gold facility is home to the Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation. The project integrates an addition and adaptive re-use of the only remaining structure from a 1960s complex designed by Frank L. Hope and Associates. Originally the Fisheries Science Center, the existing building has been reimagined into a modern hub for marine research, teaching, and collaboration.

Through careful site planning, the revitalized facility now includes new marine laboratories, classrooms, offices, and a rooftop café—plus an ocean-view terrace ideal for outdoor learning and connection. The project celebrates the site’s coastal history while advancing sustainable design and the future of ocean research.

Attendees will hear from the Safdie Rabines project team about the design approach, adaptive reuse process, and sustainable strategies that shaped this dynamic facility.

Following the tour, enjoy light refreshments and networking with colleagues overlooking the Pacific.
