California’s seismic vulnerability mandates comprehensive retrofitting strategies for aging healthcare facilities. In this learning presentation, design leaders from Cuningham and Swinerton will present the critical learning objectives involved in retrofitting the Sharp Coronado Hospital to meet the SB1953 - SPC4D standards to improve seismic resilience.

By mastering these learning objectives, hospital administrators, architects, engineers, and policymakers can navigate the complex challenges of retrofitting and foster a safer and more resilient healthcare infrastructure in California.

In this presentation, Attendees will:

Familiarize with California's seismic retrofitting regulations for hospitals, such as Senate Bill SB-1953, and ensure that the hospital meets the required seismic performance standards.
Prioritize retrofitting needs based on criticality, safety concerns, compliance with building codes and regulations, and potential impact on patient care and operational efficiency.
: Identify potential safety hazards and accessibility issues within the hospital, including fire safety, emergency evacuation procedures, and ADA compliance.
Ensuring regulatory compliance and safety: Retrofitting a hospital involves navigating complex regulatory requirements and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal laws. Learn about building codes, healthcare regulations, fire safety standards, infection control guidelines, and other relevant requirements to ensure the hospital remains legally and operationally compliant after the retrofit.
Assess Hospital Infrastructure Vulnerabilities: Develop skills in evaluating the existing hospital infrastructure and identifying potential vulnerabilities in terms of seismic resistance, electrical systems, plumbing, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), and other critical components. Understanding the current weaknesses is essential for creating an effective retrofitting plan.
