Community and economic development means much more than building quality buildings. There must be a vision to pull all of the other plans together.

C-3 (Citizens Coordinate for Century 3) is pleased to kick off the return of their signature breakfast dialogues with a compelling comparison of how two very different communities have approached this challenge. The communities of San Ysidro and Vista could hardly be geographically further from each other in San Diego County, yet they share similar goals of building a true community center for their respective communities.

In San Ysidro, Casa Familiar has a master plan for community revitalization that has centered on the Living Rooms at the Border, a mixed use building complex that includes housing, services, and a striking performance space. All of this is cast in the context of a broader approach to community building.

In Vista, Paseo Artist Village is a project of Community Housing Works, designed by M.W. Steele Group. In keeping with the goals and spirit of Vista’s Art’s District, Paseo Artist Village is a low-income community oriented toward artists and veterans. In addition to 60 apartments, retail space and community room, a gallery/workspace has been included sharing the entry courtyard. This has proved to be perfect for gallery event openings and community gatherings. Two-thirds of the apartments are occupied by artists, a great measure of success.
