Presenter – Derek Duval

Derek Duval is a registered professional engineer (PE) in Fire Protection Engineering and Fire/Life Safety Code Consulting Expert located in the Southern California Region. He works hard to ensure that his client's needs (internal and external) are met and that, most of all, the life safety goals are met for the people and property he is hired to protect. Mr. Duval built his experience in Fire Protection Engineering from a diverse background. He has experience in the development of national codes and standards, design and review fire protection systems (including but not limited to; fire alarm systems, fire sprinkler systems, smoke control systems, fire-rated construction systems), installation oversight of fire protection/alarm systems, hazard assessment and risk analysis, and special hazard knowledge. Having such exposure to different elements of fire protection engineering, is what helps him solve life safety and building code challenges.

 Attendees will learn how to:

  • Explain the goal of healthcare-focused building and fire life safety codes and how architects must take these into account when designing healthcare facilities.

  • Define the code requirements to keep in mind when making design decisions to minimize conflicts and compromises to the conceptual design.

  • Discuss how the building and life safety code can influence the design of the facility.

  • Describe the influence that the most recent building code, life safety, and design guidelines will affect the patient experience and safety.

  • Use knowledge of the latest building and life safety codes to make design decisions that will increase the effectiveness of the healthcare environment.
