Design Talks: California Sheet Metal Facility Tour

California Sheet Metal is a leading General Sheet Metal, Composite Panel, Ornamental Metal, and Railings fabricator and installer in the Southern California area (also licensed to work in Arizona and Nevada). They have proudly called San Diego home for over 100 years, providing skilled crafts men and state of the art design, fabrication, installation and coordination that building owners and developers have come to expect for their sheet metal needs.

Complications in the design process are open-ended in nature and often have more than one correct solution. California Sheet Metal draws from many years of collective experience to offer customers choices, as opposed to ultimatums, through the design process.

How can architects better realize and optimize their designs? In this course we will have an open course discussion supported with the visualization of a facility tour. The participants will be able see and to talk directly the fabricators to better understand the capabilities and limitations of materials and equipment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will learn to incorporate important material factors into their early designs (durability, cost, ease of install, substrate, desired aesthetic)

  • Attendees will understand how parameters such as joint spacing, weight, fire performance, thermal expansion, and waterproofing systems impact a facade system design

  • Attendees will learn how to Design a facade system so prefabrication can assist in achieving difficult forms and reaching a unique aesthetic impact while accommodating the limitations of efficient shipping and ease of installation.

  • Attendees will understand how fabrication equipment such as panel benders, laser cutters, and routers influence what is feasible within a facade system design
