AIA California Climate Action Series: Designing for Zero Net Carbon: 3 Case Studies of All-Electric Buildings Tune in to this free ZNCD MCE webinar on April 13th at 11:30am – you won’t want to miss it!
The session will review the design strategies for three common building types designed as all-electric buildings, discuss the readily available all-electric building systems utilized by the design teams, and present measured post-occupancy performance data. This course will also review tools, metrics, and modeling used in pursuit of the performance goals, and will highlight exemplary features of the various projects, discuss problems encountered and lessons learned that can help other practitioners achieve similar levels of performance in their own projects.
Edward Dean, FAIA, will present case studies of three common building types that are designed as all-electric buildings that will operate with zero-carbon emissions once the California electric grid has been 100% decarbonized, currently scheduled for 2045. Coincidentally, these case study buildings have been designed to achieve zero-net-energy (ZNE) performance as well through the use of on-site renewable energy systems and energy-efficient design strategies.
He will describe these design strategies for each project, discuss the readily available all-electric building systems utilized by the design teams and present measured post-occupancy performance data that supports the achievement of ZNE. Mr. Dean will discuss tools, metrics, and modeling used by the design team in pursuit of the performance goals. He will highlight exemplary features of the various projects, discuss problems encountered, and lessons learned that can help other practitioners to achieve similar levels of performance in their own projects.
He will also discuss how embodied carbon was analyzed in detail for one of the three case study buildings. This will be discussed in the context of current methodologies for estimating embodied carbon and why this has become a key part of the new definition of “Zero”.
