About the Site

Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics Judith and Walter Munk Laboratory

Situated on a coastal bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) Munk Laboratory has been an incubator of scientific and geophysical exploration and advancement since its original construction in 1963. The building houses laboratories and offices for IGPP and is named after Judith and Walter Munk, the latter of whom is known as the father of oceanography.

The laboratory is the work of acclaimed San Diego architect Lloyd Ruocco, FAIA. It is one of Ruocco’s most significant buildings, notable for its organic design and functional attributes encouraging collaboration at all levels. The exterior restoration project completed in 2020 returned the building to its former glory by repairing, selectively replacing, and refinishing severely deteriorated redwood and Douglas fir features including structural beams, posts, siding, sliding glass doors, and windows, reversing decades of deferred maintenance. Following the restoration, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the project was recognized with a Preservation Design Award and People Choice Award from the California Preservation Foundation.
