Join AIA San Diego for a tour of the recently completed Center for Coastal Studies at UC San Diego and earn 1 CE credit for attending.
Representatives from UC San Diego, Miller Hull, and PCL Construction will share insight into the project’s unique challenges, creative solutions and sustainability components as we tour this 12,000sf research facility located directly adjacent to the beach at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego.
REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED
Project Description:
The original structure, a concrete saltwater storage tank built in the 1940s and later repurposed as an office, classroom, and laboratory space, underwent a series of haphazard renovations between 1961 and 1990. In 2012, a facility assessment was conducted and the building was placed on the University’s deferred maintenance list and designated for renovation. In 2016, Miller Hull was hired to evaluate the existing building and design a full renovation of the Center for Coastal Studies. Directly adjacent to the Pacific Ocean, connecting the renovated building to its environment was a primary goal for the project.
When Miller Hull began work on the project in 2016, the building was in disrepair, lacked adequate code compliance, and was extremely degraded due to its exposure to the harsh coastal environment. Careful measures were taken to assess the existing conditions and identify issues related to the building envelope, systems, structure, and site that would provide a path to resolving
deficiencies while modernizing the facility and bringing it into compliance with building and accessibility codes. The team also factored in sustainability and resiliency measures into the recommendations, including potential effects of climate change and sea-level rise, and worked closely with the University and cost estimator to provide pricing options to build an enduring future for the facility within the project budget.
