Session C | Tech Talk: Decarbonization Toolbox @ 3:30pm | 1 HSW CE Units

By teaming up BIM Managers and technology specialists, designers can discover new decarbonization tools to support energy efficiency, landscape design, material selection, and a host of other strategies to support high-performing designs. This session will cover a suite of tools from across the design spectrum that help with measuring both operational and embodied carbon and explore alternatives to reduce the impact of our designs. Featuring Ben Regnier, AIA, Gensler

 Learning Objectives:

  • Impacts of the built environment, which generates nearly 50% of annual global CO2 emissions;

  • How to create a partnership with technology experts and BIM managers and learn how each discipline can work together to reduce the carbon emissions of the project;

  • Understand what each tool offers for the different stages in constructions and operations, and an overall impact on the built environment;

  • How to set yourself/your firm apart from the competitors by exploring and understanding these relatively new building types

Session X | ACE Mentorship talk @ 4:30pm

ACE SD has been helping high school students interested in pursuing careers in our industry in San Diego since 2002 and during that time we have awarded nearly $3M in college scholarships. In this Mentorship talk the panel will discuss:

  • The importance and necessity of mentorship in Architecture

  • Background on ACE and our mission

  • How to become a mentor (not just with ACE) and the beneficial powers of giving back - hear firsthand examples from mentors

  • Traits of the mentor/mentee relationship

  • The homerun scenario of having an ACE student come back to San Diego and work in one of our firms (Holly)

  • ACE National’s Transformative Partners: the future of mentoring where we will actually pair with students as they make their way through University, provide guidance along the journey, introduce internship opportunities, and ultimately job placement

Session F | Case Study: Sustainable Lab Design @ 4:30pm | 1 HSW CE

Spotlight on J. Craig Venter and Horton Plaza: A decade ago, we designed the world’s first all-electric, zero net energy and zero carbon lab and science buildings. Now with 10 years and multiple projects under our belt, we are able to look back at our projects to review what worked, what surprised us, and what we’re doing now as we design the next generation of zero carbon lab spaces for the future. Featuring Calina Ferraro, PE, CxA, CPD, LEED AP, Integral Group

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn about the challenges of all-electric lab and science buildings relative to other building types;

  • Learn about different technologies that can be incorporated to support sustainable and zero carbon labs;

  • Identify the challenges and opportunities of incorporating specific energy efficiency strategies and all-electric technologies in lab and science projects;

  • Identify challenges in energy and performance modeling that arise in all-electric, zero net energy lab projects, and techniques to improve the accuracy of modeling.

  • This presentation include strategies that can be applied to laboratory applications that both maintain safe conditions and also reduce energy consumption.

Session G | Culture Talk: Weaving Biophilia: Inspiring Equity and Culture in Urban Communities @ 4:30pm | 1 HSW CE

Biophilic design stimulates physical and mental health and it’s inclusion is essential for uplifting all communities. Join our immersive experience in horticulture of urban sustainable experiences, exposure to the immediate benefits of live plants. Engage in hands-on observation of the biophilic effects on your visual, olfactory, tactile, respiratory and psychological well-being. Experience to what degree direct Evolved Human-Nature Relationships inspire deeper Human-Human Relationships creating community memory and culture. Reflect, evaluate and design nature inspired spaces to engender community health and collaborative culture using problem solving criteria. Featuring Elizabeth Carmichael, AIA, EcoHouse

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore benefits to imprinting biophilic design and urban agriculture in projects for occupants' health, wellness and psychological disposition, including social prosperity to urban and affordable housing projects.

  • Learn to utilize ecological designs incorporating local native ecosystems and restoring habitats for pollinators through a variety of specific drought tolerant plants to achieve net zero water.

  • Participate in active engagement and survey with live plants, share results in groups with consideration of equitable application.

  • Assess design problems for Living Building Challenge Imperatives and implementation in own professional practice.

Session I | Healthcare Talk: Demystifying Emergency Psychiatric Services @ 5:30pm | 1 HSW CE

Designers and stakeholders must intrinsically understand the fact that we are not only designing for function but also well-being; the built environment has a direct impact on mental health. Establishing a common design language specific to mental health facilitates improved well-being across all market groups, projects, and building typologies. Conventionally, behavioral health design considerations have been limited to clinical settings, but it is as important to take these factors into consideration for non-clinical settings. Creating supportive design with mental health is accomplished through analyzing risk, implementing design standards, and citing evidence to enhance wellbeing. Featuring Sharlena Wilson, MD, Medical Director of the EmPATH Unit at Providence Hospital, L.A./San Pedro, CA & Scott Bales, AIA, Architect, Medical Planner, Associate at Cuningham in San Diego

Learning Objectives:

  • Through operational understanding of behavioral treatment models, attendees will gain a better understanding of healthcare project programming and design standards for behavioral healthcare services;

  • Application of the California Building Code as it applies to Emergency Behavioral Health settings and the overlap with Facility Guidelines Institute and California Department of Public Health;

  • Fundamental differences between the current models of emergency psychiatric treatment and services ETS, EPS, PES, EmPath Unit
