Young Architect of the Year Award fondly known as the YAYA, was created to encourage renewal within the architectural community by recognizing and promoting the next generation of architects responsible for shaping the future of our built environment.

The panel selected Benjamin White, AIA, as this year's Young Architect of the Year. Ben is a native of Denver, Colorado who migrated to San Diego to attend the NewSchool of Architecture and Design, where he earned a Bachelor's of Architecture in 2001. During his tenure at NewSchool, Ben had the opportunity to work for notable local architects such as Rob Wellington Quigley, FAIA, Jonathan Segal, FAIA, and Graham Downes. Ben followed his degree by working for Architects | Delawie Wilkes Rodrigues Barker, where he was heavily involved in the design and construction of large-scale projects including the world headquarters for Qualcomm Incorporated. In 2007 he became licensed and began teaching at NewSchool as an Adjunct Professor of Environmental Science at the Undergraduate and Graduate levels. Ben joined Roesling Nakamura Terada Architects in 2008 and was promoted to Associate in 2009 while leading the firm's San Diego City College Business and Humanities Buildings project. Ben's experience with teaching has lead him back to school this fall, and he is currently pursuing a Master's in Environmental Science and Management at the UCSB's Bren School of the Environment. Ben hopes to use this education to further efforts to develop truly sustainable architecture. Ben has been an active participant in the ACE Mentor program and is a founding member and past President of the NewSchool of Architecture's Alumni Advisory Board.
